Welcome to the website of Diss Community Farm

Featured

Welcome to the website of Diss Community Farm, we are a community group, based in and around Diss who have come together to produce food collaboratively in an ethical and sustainable way.

We are always looking for a few more members. See the About us and How to join page for more information.

We have a field in Winfarthing, together with three polytunnels; where we meet to work weekly, including harvesting whatever is ready. Whoever is working that day takes home a box of freshly harvested vegetables. Very little money is involved.

Open Day: good fun, mixed weather

Rain? Gales? Pah! It takes more than that to put a hardened community farmer off! On a weekend which saw other events cancelled at the drop of a hat we decided to be terribly British, put on our anoraks and get on with it.

Our fortitude paid off and the rain clouds scudded overhead without worrying us too much, there was even sunshine at one point which meant we could venture out of the rain tents and enjoy a Pimms and some cake (personal highlight for me, the lemon curd, marscapone and summer fruit sponge. Yummy)

I think most of us took the opportunity to have a look around Gabbi’s veg patch and admire how productive it’s looking, although the neighbouring field which has been ear-marked for expansion looks dauntingly huge!

Later in the afternoon, a game of girls versus boys rounders was instigated but had to be abandoned when the heavens opened and commenced the only real downpour of the afternoon. We took shelter in the music tent only for Kris, David, Thomas and Felix to strike up their version of ‘Why Does it Always Rain on Me?’ tres witty ….

A metaphorical ray of sunshine fell on Penelope Lister who won Il Divo restaurant vouchers – Congratulations Penelope, hope you enjoy your meal!

First veg shares – this week!

This is an exciting week for Diss Community Farm, VegShare Members will be able to come and collect their first share of the harvest on Thursday 9th June.  We have found a temporary, free collection point for the next three or four weeks, in a friends double garage.

 THURSDAYS   2:00 p.m.  –  6:00 p.m.

21 Carmel – Stanley Road – Diss

(Nr Roman Catholic Church)

The first vegshare will contain some spinach, and lettuce and probably kale.  At thecollection point there will be a list of what makes up each weeks share, you will be asked to weigh out/count out your own produce and pack it into your own bag.

Please bring your own bag!

Payment

  • Some members have paid for 11 wks or 22 wks in advance, we will be happy to accept advanced payment from other members on Thursday, bring your cheque book! 🙂
  • We will also have standing order forms so people can set up monthly payments.
  • We would prefer advance payments or standing orders, however if you are unable to do this then we are happy to accept payment on a weekly basis when you collect your veg.
  • All vegshare members have made a commitment to the project and therefore we will be expecting full payment for the weekly veg shares even if you are not able to collect it.  If you are unable to collect your share (ie you are on holiday) you can arrange for someone else to have your veg share (in this case please make sure you decide who is paying for it), or you might decide not to have the share – inboth cases you must let Penelope Lister know by noon on Wednesday of that week—preferably by email.
  • Penelope Lister   pnlister@gmail.com
  • Tel:  01379 742524  (Mob. 0781 6378875)

If you need to drive you can park in front of the house, but please be sure not to block in neighbours car (21a Stanley Rd), we hope to make an arrangement with Catholic Church to use their car park if space is tight.

A Big thank you to Rachel and Jamie for helping us out by letting us use their garage.

If you are free at all to help with the harvest of the weekly shares on a Thursday morning from about 9.30 a.m. then let Ange know, email:  disscommunityfarm@yahoo.co.uk  We could really use extra pairs of hands for harvest on a regular basis.

Host a Helpx Volunteer

We have signed up to have HelpX volunteers come and stay to help out with all the work at Diss Community Farm.

What is HelpX:  HelpX is provided primarily as a cultural exchange for working holiday makers who would like the opportunity during their travels abroad, to stay with local people and gain practical experience. In the typical arrangement, the helper works an average of 4 hours per day and receives free accommodation and meals for their efforts. Helpers often live with the host family and are expected to join in and offer a helping hand with day-to-day activities.

“I have found helpX to be brilliant. We have met some wonderful people who have been a great help to us at our farm and we have enjoyed the interaction of helpers visiting us from all over the world, bringing new ideas and a new view of life. It’s hard work and its fun!!”  (Jayne UK host)

We are looking for people that would be prepared to host a HelpX helper for a week or two, or more if you wanted.  You would need to give them a bed, meals and when necessary transport them to Winfarthing.  I have already been contacted by a few volunteers that are keen to join us over the Summer, so if you think you could help us by hosting someone then please let me know.  Thanks Ange.  email:  disscommunityfarm@yahoo.co.uk

New DCF Logo – Let’s have a heated debate!

DCF Logo 1

DCF Logo 2

I hope I’m not the only DCF member who used to watch Mrs Merton or that joke will fall horribly flat.

<tumbleweed>

Anyhoo – The Communications team are in the process of coming up with a logo to represent Diss Community Farm on this website and our wider correspondence too. Pictured are a couple of draft designs which Patrick has come up with. They’re handpainted sketches at the moment, he’s very open to feedback and would love to hear any suggestions for either fine tuning the 2 existing designs or for completely new ideas to play with.

Please vote in the poll and leave us lots of comments.

Project grows at Winfarthing

Six people turned out this sunny bank holiday Monday to work on the vegetable pilot project in Winfarthing.  The morning was spent clearing the wheat that has regrown, and it’s now nearly all gone!  Canes were put up for beans, spinach planted out and wind protection created for courgettes. Michael kindly donated about 50 strawberry plants which will be a wonderful addition to the veg.   (see gallery for more pics)

Before leaving the more tender plants were tucked up for the cold nights ahead with some fleece.  After lunch work continued at Gabbi’s site in Gissing where cabbages, celery, broccoli and kale were potted on, these will be taken over to Winfarthing to planted out.

After chatting with David Mitchell, the owner of the land in Winfarthing we were excited to be offered more land to use from July this year, this means that Gabbi can start planning and preparing to grow winter crops.  David has also confirmed that we are able to use the site for 2012, enabling us to have an overlap between the pilot project and the long term project when we have identified a permanent site.  We are really excited by this prospect and very appreciative of David’s support and generosity.

If you want to volunteer we would really appreciate some help every Monday and on the next farm work day on Sat 21st May.
